- There has been growing concern within the mental health and suicide prevention space around the potential real-world impact of exposing people to media depictions of suicide. This chapter explores reactions to Netflix’s young adult series 13 Reasons Why (2017–2020), which initially focused on the suicide of its main character and included a graphic depiction of her death. The show’s first season generated debates between the creative industries, mental health and suicide prevention professionals around what is safe and appropriate content for young people to consume. In response, the second season’s release was guided by expert advice including the addition of help-seeking messaging, linked reference material, a coordinated online discussion and greater focus on protective themes. Studies on the association between the mediated suicide in 13 Reasons Why and actual suicidal behaviour further increased media interest in the show. This body of evidence resulted in a complete amendment to the suicide scene in season one by Netflix. Since 2002, Mindframe has provided comprehensive national guidance, training and education on responsible, accurate and sensitive portrayals of mental illness and suicide. This chapter introduces Mindframe’s work with Netflix Australia on 13 Reasons Why around the risks associated with media depictions of suicide and the impact this can have on audiences.
